Lululemon leggings are one of those items I'd confidently declare essential in every person's wardrobe. Our sartorial preferences haven't spanned far beyond "anything stretchy" since March 2020 – and whether we've been reaching for our trusty black leggings or well-loved yoga pants – comfort has been our key criteria. But that doesn't mean finding a really great pair is easy. Unfortunately, it's not, and you have to be prepared to spend a little extra if you want something of outstanding quality.
You see, there are certain requirements when it comes to leggings: they need to be high-waisted enough to make you feel confident and supported, stretchy AF, buttery-soft, 100% squat-proof while remaining breathable and not at all saggy. It's also nice to own gym leggings with pockets (if we're being really fussy about things), and have something with excellent sweat-wicking abilities and a second-skin feel. We told you it was no mean feat. Unless, of course, you're Lululemon.
What is so special about Lululemon leggings?
Lululemon leggings are absolutely epic, and they make the whole “perfect workout leggings” thing look so easy. Seriously – I've tried gym leggings from countless brands in my role as Commerce Editor, and Lululemon leggings remain unbeaten.
Of course, you've probably heard the fuss a million times before - then pondered on why the hell they're so damn expensive/become overwhelmed by all the different fits, feels and lengths. So, as a Lululemon legging connoisseur, I'm here to seal the deal, spill the beans on why they're worth the money and make your journey-to-purchase as seamless as the Lululemon Align Pants themselves.
Designed for women-first, not women-also.
Which Lululemon leggings are best?
There are five main styles of lululemon leggings, so the best Lululemon leggings for you will depend on what you intend on wearing them four. Each style comes in varying lengths and colours. First, let’s choose your style...
The Lululemon Align leggings are perhaps the brand’s most-loved style, and the best Lululemon leggings for yoga. Or lounging. They’re Lululemon’s stretchiest style, crafted from super-soft Nulu fabric (which is quick-drying like you wouldn’t believe), and they have minimal seams plus an impressive four-way stretch.
There are a few different Align pant iterations to choose from. Depending on your height and cut preference, you can pick up the original Align Pant in 25 inch (slightly cropped), 28 inch (more full-length), 21 inch and 17 inch (finishing just below the knee).
More recently, Lululemon dropped their Align Pant in a super-high rise cut: the lululemon Align High-Rise Pant. These are available in either a 25 inch or 31 inch leg, or in 28 inch with pockets. The lululemon Align™ High-Rise Pant with Pockets 28" have a waistband pocket and side pockets for storing your essentials. The waistband on all three lengths sits well above the belly button.
The Wunder Train High-Rise Tights are the best lululemon leggings for high intensity workouts when you expect to get really sweaty.
Their key features? The fabric is extremely moisture-wicking, and they have waist drawstrings for a customisable fit.
All Wunder Train leggings are made from Everlux: lululemon’s fastest-drying fabric yet. The material is the ultimate in technical performance fabrics, the wicking yarns pull sweat away from the body and helps it evaporate so sweat marks become a thing of the past. The dual-knit construction feels soft on the outside and cool and sleek next to skin.
You can get Wunder Train leggings in 21, 23, 25 and 28 inch leg lengths, and in a range of sizes, including plus size.
If you’re after a new pair of running leggings, Lululemon’s Base Pase are the leggings to go for. They have a hidden back pocket for storing your essentials on long trips, plus a continuous drawcord at the waist which is easy to cinch (and won’t get lost in the wash).
Base Pase leggings are made from the brand’s Nulux™ fabric which is SO smooth and lightweight that you’ll feel like you can run forever. Another reason they’re so great for running? They Base Pase leggings have no inseam, which means chafing is a thing of the past.
Base Pase leggings are available in various leg lengths, from 17 inch (more of a capri style) to 31 inch. The middle ground would be the 25/28 inch leg: more of a high-rise crop.
InStill are Lululemon’s most recent legging launch, also designed – as with the Align Leggings – for yoga or low-impact exercise. Think: pilates and barre. They’re available in either 25 inch or 23 inch, and they have a back drop-in pocket.
They provide a slimming, hugged feel like the Wunder Under collection, and they stay put so that you don’t have to pull them up mid-practise. They’re also the first Lululemon leggings to be made from SmoothCover fabric, which hugs your body like the Luxtreme™ fabric, but feels buttery soft like the lululemon Align™ collection made in Nulu™. It’s quick-drying, sweat-wicking and with added Lycra for stretch and shape retention.
Not sure whether to go for the Align Pants or the InStill leggings? InStill have more seams around the waist, and not such a high waistband.
The Fast and Free HR Tights are the best lululemon leggings for running. Feel as fast as you do free in these barely-there feeling tights that won't distract you from picking up the pace. Nulux™ fabric offers near weightless coverage for a seriously smooth stride when running.
The main differences between the Fast and Free tights and the Base Pase leggings? Fast and Free tights have two pockets as opposed to one, and a slightly tighter waistband. They’re also available in a non-reflective fabric. Both pairs have continuous drawcords.
